Village Habitat Design was engaged by the Planning
Department of the Turks and Caicos Islands to begin the process
of developing a Sustainable Development Planning Initiative
for the Islands. Planning for sustainable growth is the most
effective way to protect resources upon which the economy
and quality of life depend.
|
The goals for sustainable planning are:
- Protect environmental resources. Establish target growth
capacity that sustains quality of ecosystems, human health,
and economic prosperity.
- Improve the quality of life. Provide for a diverse economy
balancing foreign investment and local enterprise, imports
and local production enabling lasting prosperity.
- Strengthen the community. Develop a public realm that
includes the entire community. Incorporate sustainability
in the education programs of the community.
|
| Sustainable planning principles
Five primary planning principles must be employed to enable
continuing prosperity, vibrant community, and ecological integrity:
- Natural systems preserved
- Compact nodes of mixed-usedevelopment
- Sustainable Local Businesses
- Diversity of Housing
- Community Supportive Public Realm
